Exercise #23: Finally made it to the lucky last

I have finally made it to the last exercise. The journey have been long and very rewarding. The most enjoyable exercises were: Social networking and Flickr. The other exercises were alright, but they were also hard to navigate too. Flickr I will definitely use more in the future.

All these exercises that I've been to during this journey has opened a lot of doors for me, as technology is always different, I try to upgrade myself on what's happening in the technology world. Especially working in the library, I will want to know what patrons are talking about when they chat to us about the technology they use at home or at work and what is out there. Web 2.0 have been a really wonderful experience for and I have learnt a lot from it. This journey has been great with so many of our other colleagues participating into the exercises and an experience to work together as a team and learn from each other. Way to go North Shore Libraries!!

Exercise #22: My thoughts on social networking

My thoughts on the libraries use of social networking is actually a great idea as you can organise events with colleagues or put in events on a Myspace or Bebo site. In facebook we have put a North Shore Libraries group on it so that we can invite more of our fellow colleagues in to share our knowledge, experiences and to have a good catch up after a hard day's work. I definitely recommend more staff from the other North Shore Libraries to join facebook and be invited to our NSLs group where you can socialise with the other libraries and to have a good chat.

Exercise #21: Social networking with facebook

I am a member of facebook, I am loving and also be very addictive once I go on as there are so many applications that I go onto. Facebook is good to look for lost friends that you haven't seen for a long time, photos you can share and also know what they are upto every week as there is a status that you type in on what you are doing now. I use to have a Bebo account, but I have now cancelled it as I didn't use that account as much as I use facebook.

Been to the other sites like the Rotorua and Central Libraries where they have Bebo in it. Our North Shore Libraries should have a site like that too so that our patrons will know whats happening. Especially when we have events or our system is going down or that we are upgrading our system.

Ebooks

The experience on Ebooks was excellent there a lot of varieties of formats to choose from. Easy to navigate and I can see our libraries will be using it in the future. Interesting things like the copyright law, that they out of print classics that you can look for on ebooks and how all the formats worked.

Podcast

Finally added a RSS feed from the Podcast. I didn't enjoy this exercise as it was very hard to navigate and don't see myself using it in the future.

Exercise #18 YouTube

I am a YouTube fan, I love going onto YouTube to look at all sorts of things from very old tv series, music videos, dancing with the stars and everything that I can think of to watch. I saw a few library videos that I found really cheesy and there was one called the Library dominoes which I found really fun to look at. Instead of using the dominoes, they used the library books as dominoes. Unfortunately I don't know how to add the YouTube video to my blog.

I enjoyed this exercise very much. Way to go YouTube!!

Exercise #17 Web 2.0 Award List

I had a look at the Web 2.0 award list, there was a lot to look at and very colourful too. The websites I had browse around in was wetpaint from Host wiki. This website was very interesting to look, had a lot green and other bright colors in it. I also had a look in the Google blog search which is excellent as I can search a lot of different information in this website. Examples of information I can look for in Google is travelling, entertainment, health, libraries from other countries and school websites. As Google is already widely used we are already using this application a lot now in the libraries.

Exercise #16 Zoho Writer

I have joined to the Zoho writers account, at first it was a very bumpy start as the computer was very slow this morning and this exercise took a while to load and open. After giving Zodo a rest, I came back on this afternoon to work on creating some test documents. If I had more time I will explore on this exercise.

Here are my two tests of creating a Zoho writer:

Exercise #15 Rollyo

Rollyo took me a while to navigate and there were a lot of things to look at. This exercise was fun to explore and also to create a celebrity website to search for and once you get the hang of how to navigate it is actually simple to use.

I found this exercise a little easier than Delicious. Even though I had a little bit of trouble at the beginning but that is the learning part of this exercise. I can see why other people will be interested to take this Rollyo a step further.

Here is the website URL to go into my created Rollyo:

Exercise #14 Library Thing

Library thing was cool to use. I found it very useful and I can add more books that I have read into my very own library online. The Library thing tour was great, very straight forward and easy to navigate.

Here is a link to my library website.

Exercise #13 Image generator

I had a bit of trouble working out how to copy this image to my blog and finally was able to figure it out after a few tries. I found the image generater really fun to use, there are lots of things to explore and to play. I enjoyed this exercise very much. I hope to do more exploring as there was so much to look and so little time to spare. I finally made it though. I found this image of the flowers and the text I've put in was very interesting and the flowers are lovely with bright colours.

Execise #12 Learning 2.0 SandBox wiki

This exercise took me a few days to know what I was doing. Luckily I had one of my colleagues guding me and reading the instructions out loud helped me to be able to do this exercise. After reading the instructions, it was just so easy to do!!

Now I will know exactly what to do next time, just need to read the instructions a few times before I can get it.

Exercise #11 Wiki

I found in Wiki that the Training and Development for Librarians: Training staff was interesting as we are always need to train new staff up so that we will have people to call on when the regular are on leave or when the weekend need extra to work in the library. The North Shore Libraries are providing this application already for new staff to be trained up as Librarians.

The self-promotion tips for new librarians was also very interesting to look at as that can expand people's self-confidence and public speaking without being shy.

For me I love Wiki as you can look up anything you like from celebrities to tv programs and other very useful information like libraries. Very interesting how there is a library in Wiki and amazing what you can find too!!.

Exercise #10 Web 2.0

It is interesting how Web 2.0 is the new technology for everyone in the world to use. The experience of it all have been overwhelming and there is just so much to look at and also finding the time to do the Web 2.0 amongst off desk tasks to do in the library. I am slowly getting there, I just need to speed up the process before the whole Web 2.0 finishes.

I can see why staff and customers are so into Web 2.0 as you can learn alot from the whole experience and I am glad that I went for the Web 2.0. Otherwise wouldn't have known there is so much more than just Google and Yahoo.

Technorati experience #9

My learning experience with Technorati was hard to navigate and didn't really see why it was so interesting. When typed in learning 2.0, I noticed that they have highlighted the keywords 2.0 and learning. I can say that I wasn't into this exercise as I was with the first 8 exercises. The results were similar when I typed in Learning 2.0 in the tags and blog directory and there wasn't anything surprising that I saw.

Del.icio.us #8

I can see why people are into the whole Del.icio.us book marking it does have some very interesting book marks and tags in them. When I was looking through the book marks I was taken aback of how much information that we can go through at such a short time. I enjoyed looking at the photography book mark as there is so much history in those photos that changed the whole world. There is always a story behind the photos that makes them surreal to look at. There so many more that I want to look at and time is running out to scroll through every single one!!

RSS Feeds Discovery # 7

I have created an account for bloglines.com and I find that some of the feeds are interesting. I can look up what ever topics I am interest in. But I wouldn't use RSS personally as I can just type in any website about various topics from entertainment to beauty on Yahoo or Google and it bring up different websites for me to look at.

Keeping in touch with friends on Facebook

I love going onto Facebook as I can invite friends to join, download recent photos, post comments and also send personal messages to specific friends that are not suitable to put on the public wall post. There are lots of applications that you can add in, when friends invite you to add this and that. At the moment North Shore Libraries is on facebook and it is in a group page and only staff that works in the North Shore Libraries can access the group page and also past staff members too. Facebook can really addictive once you go on as there so many things that you can look at. Friends' profiles, photos, comments and wall posts. Very easy to navigate too.

Experiencing mosaic with Flickr

Mosaic collage of evening scenery from the buildings in different countries. Lovely colours and the view of the buildings in the evenings I am intrigued and can be miles away wishing that I was there. Thank you to the photographer David Gutierre for putting such a creative mosaic.

Flickr is just a great, I can look for anything I like from tulips to mosaics and many other things. I really enjoyed the experience since I know what I need to do on uploading and posting etc.

Orange tulip experience

I am really into tulips and since the last photo that I uploaded was from my personal computer and is a painted one, I looked for a real tulip instead and upload it from Flickr, they have really lovely tulips in there. This time around was very easy to navigate as I am starting to know my way round now and the steps I have missed. First I save this photo to my file under H:drive, then I went to upload photos and videos and clicked onto Choose photos, a popup with a list of staff names, I clicked onto my name on which I saved the photo on and just opened the file and uploaded the tulip to the Flickr account and blogged it to my account from Flickr.

I will like to thank the photographer Elvy for this lovely photo of the tulip.

Flickr experience

I went onto the Flickr Learn more tour and that was very interesting as it gave me six steps to follow. At the beginning I had trouble uploading my own photo to Flickr because I had missed a step and I couldn't work out which step was missing. After a few minutes, I went to ask one of my workmates and she helped me out and both of us retraced the steps I had missed. The Flickr took me a while to work my way through but I got there in the end. This is my second attempt to use Flickr to upload this photo to my Flickr account saving it on the computer and then uploading it to my blog account. It took me a while to get there.....but I think I sort of slowly getting there.

Long time no see

Hi

I have been very slack on my blog lately and sorry that I haven't written in it for so long. I am a little behind on the Web 2.0 and gradually picking up the pace this week with the Flickr and adding just one photo in my blog. There will be more to come soon.

Apart from juggling with my studying, I have started going to ballroom dancing lessons with my friends on Wednesday nights in Albany. The studio is call U2CanDance, there are two nights that you can attend to Wednesday and Friday nights. I tend to go on Wednesday nights with my friends, as Friday nights I am mostly out in the cinemas watching movies with my other friends.

I will try to update my blog more often. Have a great weekend everyone and take care!!

Manly beach

Manly beach, originally uploaded by JC the Party Planner.

This photo was taken in Manly beach, Sydney when I was visiting friends earlier in the year. That day I was at Manly Beach, there was a swimming competition going. The sand castle behind me was the largest I've seen so far.

Blog experience

This is my third day using the blog. I am still trying to work my way round the blog and also figuring out how to look for my colleagues blogs with no luck. Hopefully when I have my reference training tomorrow we'll be shown how to look for other peoples' blogs.

I wish everyone a great evening tonite.
